Activating Your Account

Please Note that Union College uses a Multi-Factor Authentication method (MFA) for security. This app is required to activate and maintain your account for as long as you have a Union College account. Please do not delete the Microsoft Authenticator App.

Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator App from the app store on your mobile device. The app is published by Microsoft Corporation.

You will not need to open the Microsoft Authenticator app at this time, but it will be needed later in this process.

Please note that if using an iOS device you will to take additional steps to Allow Notifications. Go here for instructions.

When prompted, you MUST allow notifications for this app to be able to approve device connections to college resources. You should also allow the app to access the camera.

To Begin the Account Activation Process Please navigate to https://Aka.ms/mfasetup

Enter the Union College email address from the Welcome Email.

Choose Next.

On the next page, enter the password from the Welcome Email.

Choose Sign In. Once you enter the correct email and password combination, you will be prompted for more information.

Choose Next to continue the setup process. The next few steps guide you through setting up the Microsoft Authenticator app for use with your account.

If you did not download the Microsoft Authenticator App onto your mobile device, please do so now by going to the app store and searching for Microsoft Authenticator.

Choose Next, then scan the QR code with the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device.

Once the code has been scanned, choose Next.

On your mobile device, you should receive a request to approve sign-in.

Choose Approve on the Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device.

You should see following screen after choosing Approve:

Choose Next to finish setting up the Microsoft Authenticator App.

On the next screen, enter a phone number and choose to receive either a text or a phone call. This is a backup method of getting in to your account.

Once a phone number is entered, the blue Next box will appear. Choose Next when completed.

Microsoft will either send a text or call via an automated system to present a 6 digit code. Enter that code to verify the phone number entered is correct.

Once the phone number is verified the following screen will appear:

Choose Next.

Choose Done to complete the process.

If you are on a computer that does not have other users, you can choose to stay signed in. Do not choose to stay signed in if you are on a public computer.

Choose Yes or No.

The next screen will take you to your account information.

Your account is activated and ready for you to update your password. Please continue with the following instructions.

From the Account information Page, choose Overview.

NOTE: If you closed the page and have to restart, go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com and log in using the password from the Welcome Email.

If you are on a mobile device you may have to click the 3 bars in the top left corner to see Overview.

Once on the Overview page, find the Password tile.

Choose CHANGE PASSWORD.

On the next page, enter your old password followed by a new password in the appropriate box.  Confirm the new password and choose Submit.

New password requirements are as followed

A minimum of 12 characters and a maximum of 256 characters.

Requires three out of four of the following:

  • Lowercase characters.

  • Uppercase characters.

  • Numbers (0-9).

  • Symbols (see the previous password restrictions).

Congratulations!  You have successfully activated and configured your new account!
